Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
