🔗 Share this article From Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Release is Mixed. Right-leaning responses to the limited release of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner. Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric Administration officials justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter outlining the censorship procedure. Questions Raised by Redactions While the former president's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for greater openness. “The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued. A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release However, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions. The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out. Yet a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the attack. “This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer. “Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.” Former President Campaign Issues Statement Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment. “The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added. Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was relatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that preceded the legislative approval to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication. The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained little previously unseen information.
